So glad we made the effort to head over to Waitomo for the caves. Nearly didn't!
These photos were at the end of the tour, we were not permitted to take photos in the caves.
The hour long tour was fab. The caves were opened to the public in 1889! The stalactites and stalagmites were so impressive and to hear someone sing in the Cathedral (the part of the cave with the highest ceiling, 16m) was so moving.
Then we got to the glow worms which are actually a type of knat. The glow worms hang fine threads down and use their lights to attract insects. We were able to see clusters of these threads glistening with moisture droplets. Just beautiful.
Then it was into the boat as we silently moved through the water and the worms lit up the cave walls like constellations in the night sky. It was truly magical and made more so by the absence of cameras and phones.
This giant Weta raided our picnic!
Whilst the South Island has its giant mountains, turquoise lakes and waterfalls the North has marvellous, green rolling hills which go on and on and on.
Big, handsome boy!
